What is Clinical Psychology

... and is it right for you or your child?

Choosing the right professional to support you or your child is an important decision. We understand that it can feel confusing - sorting through unfamiliar terms and trying to understand the differences between various professionals. To make this a little easier, let us clarify what Clinical Psychologists do.

What is Clinical Psychology?

Clinical psychologists are specially trained to help people of all ages with a wide range of challenges, from emotional difficulties and behavioural concerns to developmental or mental health issues. We look at the whole person, not just one part of their life. Whether it’s understanding what’s behind a child’s struggles in school, helping someone cope with anxiety or trauma, or supporting families through tough times, our goal is always the same: to help you or your child feel better and thrive.

What Makes Clinical Psychologists Different?

Clinical psychologists are experts in understanding how our emotions, behaviours, and development are connected. We don’t just focus on one area (like academic performance or emotional struggles)we look at the bigger picture, considering things like:

  • Emotional health and well-being.

  • Social relationships and interactions.

  • Underlying factors such as neurodiversity (e.g., autism, ADHD) or early life experiences.

This whole-person approach allows us to create personalized support that truly meets your needs or your child’s.

Highly Specialised Training

Becoming a clinical psychologist takes years of training and dedication. The title "Clinical Psychologist" is legally protected, which means only those with extensive qualifications and experience can use it.

Here’s what that training involves:

  • Advanced Education: Clinical psychologists complete a postgraduate Clinical Doctorate, which includes many years of university study and specialised training.

  • Hands-On Experience: We gain hundreds of hours of supervised clinical practice, working with individuals and families in a variety of settings.

  • Professional Registration: We’re registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), ensuring we meet strict standards of training and practice.

It’s important to know that while “Clinical Psychologist” is a protected title, “Psychologist” is not. Unfortunately, anyone can call themselves a psychologist without the same level of training. To ensure you’re working with someone qualified, always check their HCPC registration.

How Clinical Psychologists Differ from Psychiatrists, Counsellors, and Therapists

It’s easy to get confused about the differences between professionals. Here’s how clinical psychologists are different:

  • Psychiatrists: Psychiatrists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat mental health conditions, often using medication. Clinical psychologists also provide clinical assessments but are not qualified in prescribing medication, rather they focus on talking therapies. Clinical Psychologists may work alongside psychiatrists if medication is part of the treatment plan.

  • Counsellors and Therapists: Counsellors and therapists provide wonderful support, but their training is often narrower and focuses on specific techniques. Clinical psychologists have broader training, allowing us to assess, diagnose, and treat more complex conditions.

  • Educational Psychologists: Educational psychologists are highly trained specialists who focus on children’s learning and academic performance. They assess specific learning conditions, such as dyslexia, and provide strategies to support progress in school and navigate school support systems (such as EHCP processes). Clinical psychologists can also conduct cognitive assessments but take a broader approach, addressing emotional, social, and mental health factors alongside learning and development.

Why Work with a Clinical Psychologist?

Choosing a clinical psychologist means choosing someone with the expertise to help you or your child in a thoughtful and tailored way. We can provide:

  • In-Depth Assessments: We take time to understand what’s really going on and provide clear, helpful insights.

  • Personalised Support: Using a range of therapies, we create plans that are designed specifically for you or your child.

  • Family Guidance: For children, we often work closely with parents and caregivers to help you feel confident in supporting your child’s emotional and developmental needs.
